Who We Are
A successful entrepreneur, Samsharnur, immigrated to Canada triumphing over cultural and language barriers. Coming from Tacheng, Xinjiang, she has always had a deep passion for expanding the rich Uyghur culture in her homeland. Since her arrival in Canada in 2007, she has dedicated herself to being a Uyghur cultural activist, actively promoting and preserving her heritage across the country. Recognizing the importance of uniting and supporting Uyghur Canadians and individuals who share her love for the Uyghur culture, she initiated the establishment of a society. Through this society, she aims to engage with many Uyghur Canadians and other ethnic groups, cultivating a greater appreciation and understanding of the vibrant Uyghur culture. Samsharnur’s steadfast commitment to her cultural heritage is truly inspiring, and her efforts have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the Uyghur community in Canada.
Our Story
The formation of the Uyghur Heritage Society in Vancouver, Canada, in July 2020, followed by its official incorporation on February 4th, 2021, is a significant moment for the Uyghur community. With Uyghur immigration to Canada dating back to 1974, the community has steadily grown to about 2,200 individuals, mainly concentrated in urban centers like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Vancouver, specifically, has seen a rise in its Uyghur population since 1997, with an estimated 300 members currently residing in the city. The establishment of the Uyghur Heritage Society is eagerly anticipated and symbolizes a new era in preserving and honouring Uyghur culture and heritage within Canadian society.
Our Society
The Uyghur Heritage Society, founded in Vancouver in 2021, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Uyghur community in Canada. Our initiatives aim to foster Uyghur cultural awareness, encourage integration into Canadian society, and celebrate the unique traditions of the Uyghur people. Through collaboration and support, we work towards creating a culturally diverse and inclusive society where all communities, including the Uyghur community, are honored and valued.
